What's your favorite thing about being alone?
When we cannot bear to be alone, it means we do not properly value the only companion we will have from birth to death - ourselves. ~Eda LeShan
I have a great deal of company in the house, especially in the morning when nobody calls. ~Henry David Thoreau
Solitude never hurt anyone. Emily Dickinson lived alone, and she wrote some of the most beautiful poetry the world has ever known... then went crazy as a loon. ~Matt Groening, The Simpsons, spoken by the character Lisa Simpson
I rather relate to Lisa Simpson who values things on the surface, but acknowledges the deeper colors of things as well.
The best part is just that; being alone. The well-known committee in my brain can't stand being alone, so it leaves, nattering all the way about how unfair it all is. This, of course, leaves just me.
Much like my walk today after a brief, but intense winter storm brought us some badly needed snow.
I live on what some call the edge of town. Out my back door there are no more houses, thus, it must be the edge of civilization, right? So, across that imaginary line I go as often as possible until I am the only one making tracks in the snow, at least, of the two-legged variety anyway.
I reacquaint myself with myself as I go along, wondering at the thoughts of those that will surely follow the shuffling footsteps I leave in the snow.
"Who in the world walked all the way up here?" the snowshoers and skiers will ponder as they secretly appreciate that someone else broke trail.
The only problem I have with enjoying being alone is that I tend to indulge this luxury a wee bit too much, and I find myself alone more than I would like suddenly, over the years.
Emily Dickinson did live alone most of her life, and indeed did go 'round the bend, as my grandma would say. There is a cautionary tale there, my cheeky monkey, if ever there was.
And so , while I truly enjoy being by myself at times, my door is seldom locked, and there are two big tea mugs in my cupboard at all times.

come to our next party— i don't know when it will be yet. I'll let you know. we have 5 or 10 big mugs. :-)
dawn, can i come too?
seriously, geo, i feel a lot like lisa simpson much of the time too. emily said that the soul selects its own company, or something like that, right?
laura, yes of course you can come too. how long is a drive to near basalt, colorado. seriously– we have big couch's near the pellet stove for far from home guests. :-) and we love to have guests. our dogs love to have guests the most. be prepared for lots of attention from dogs if you come to my house. :-)
When is the next party? I think I'm hosting it next week end? Isn't that the good thing about teaching that you get maybe two weeks at Cristmas. Come visit us all Laura!
I have Saturday night available, I think— are you really hosting? Kiley wants to play too. Or what about Saturday night, the 29th of December– at my house? or also?
Both!
What a beautiful sentiment… “My door is seldom locked, and there are two big tea mugs in my cupboard at all times…” Your visual imagery is always crisp and refreshing.
Keep the teacups handy - I'll bring the tea.
Lovely photograph.
I would love to come visit you all. seriously, how does February look?
It looks snowy. Our doors are open and I think Dawn is off nightshift then.
