Where Where did your name come from?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for May 21, 2007:
Well, Geo's origin is Greek and means, of the Earth. However, George comes from a line of George's that would look like the line waiting to get into the newest Harry Potter movie. You can't swing a dead cat in my family, both sides, without hitting several Georges.
My dad was a George, his Grandfather was as George, my mom's brother was a George, his son is a George, although there is a USMC (ret) on the back-end. My cousin's son is a George....... Well, you get the idea.
However, what frosts my flakes is that my dad didn't like the name, his grandfather, either, so why did they give it to me?!
Maybe they had heard it all and grew weary of it as I did; Georgie-Porgie, Curious George and so on. But why give me a name that they didn't want to be called by?
Dad was Fred so long almost no one knew that his first name was George until his funeral.
I've persisted, though, and I am still George. But, even that got shortened many years ago to Geo (jee-oh).
Although, if you come to town and sit with me for a bit, sooner or later one of my friends will walk by and sing out quite loudly, "George-Bob!!" from my bus driving days at night here. We were all The Bobs including Bob-Bob, Liz-Bob, Mat-Bob, Stan-Bob and Tom-Bob along with many, many more.
George, Porge, Geo, George-Bob, Doc and Hey, You are all appellations I will answer to.

How about Geo-Bob? ;-)
First born sons in my family are always named Albert. This goes back at least 5 generations. I hated it as a kid but now I'm sort of attached to it, and since I fathered two daughters I never had to apply it to a mini-me.
Albert……..
i rather like geo, myself.
doc, eh? curious about that. that was my grandfather's 'name.' i don't think anyone ever called him cj or charles.
God Geo, your name sure does conjure up some funny impulses. Sounds like painful but necessary tradition, the passing on of it. Actually a name I really liked came from an Ursula Leguin book and subsequent film, The Lathe of Heaven. The main character's name was Georgor, pronounced jor-jor, and short for George Orwell. I always like the flow, the exotic sound of a repeated syllable. And in addition the character had the ability to change reality for the whole world repeatedly as needed. Nice connection.
