My Dream Assignment

I have submitted a plan for a dream assignment at http://www.nameyourdreamassignment.com/the-ideas/Geo/the-greatest-lake-but-for-how-long/
My dream assignment would be to solo circumnavigate the greatest lake of them all, Lake Superior.  I would photographically document the changes, the effects and affects of the changing climate around the largest lake by area and to its inhabitants and denizen both two legged and four.  If you have some time, log onto the site, register (it's free) and check out not only my idea, but the hundreds of other worthy ideas that are found there.  If I can garner enough votes, I may have a chance at a dream assignment.  So, if you have seen some of my photos and read some of my blogs, think about a vote for Geo!

Geo,
I know that a project of this magnitude is something that you were cut out for.  Your photographic skills, natual eye, personality and spirit would breathe incredible life into this project.  Your way with people would easily draw out amazing life stories of how The Greatest Lake has been a way of life for generation upon generation.

The documentation of your journey could be compiled into an invaluable book… a resource; and although water covers 70.78 percent of the earth’s surface, let this be a reminder that a mere 0.3 percent of that water is useable by humans.  Fresh water lakes account for 0.009 percent of the world’s water distribution!  We can not continue to take fresh water for granted.  As you have stated in your dream assignement, decisions are being made which have huge effects on the natural order of things.

‘“We created a way of raising standards of living that we can’t possibly pass on to our children,” said Joe Romm, a physicist and climate expert who writes the indispensable blog climateprogress.org. We have been getting rich by depleting all our natural stocks - water, hydrocarbons, forests, rivers, fish and arable land - and not by generating renewable flows.’

‘“Just as a few lonely economists warned us we were living beyond our financial means and overdrawing our financial assets, scientists are warning us that we’re living beyond our ecological means and overdrawing our natural assets,” argues Glenn Prickett, senior vice president at Conservation International. But, he cautioned, as environmentalists have pointed out: “Mother Nature doesn’t do bailouts.”’

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could just pass the Great Lakes on from one generation to the next?  Imagine Lake Superior unexploited… unharmed… and preserved, protected and revered as a very important part of the world’s ecosystems!

Your dream assignment suits you well.  You would do an amazing job of documenting your journey.  You have the physical strength to make the trip.  Your eye is sharp and your photography is amazing.  Your people skills will bring out the greatest photos and stories that have never been told.  I know this is one story that needs to be told.  After all, they’re not called the Great Lakes for nothing…

You have my vote!  Now it’s time to make this dream of yours, a reality!

Hugs!

-Susan

I hope you get to do this! it looks amazing.

I think about being a decent enough photographer one day to take some pictures along the William Bartram Trail.
